What a first-time fix actually looks like on a 5–40 truck HVAC shop.
The fault code the board threw, the wrong move the tech tried first, the diagnostic shift that closed it on visit one, and what happened to the callback rate over the next sixty days. Anonymized. Drawn from real tickets the bench has reviewed.

E1 — high-pressure
VRF wall unit on first cooling call: board throws a high-pressure fault and shuts the compressor down.
Prior visits: Two warranty visits in the prior month — a run-capacitor swap and a contactor clean — did not hold.
01·What the tech tried first
Replaced the run capacitor (5 µF off nameplate, visually bulged) and sent the unit.
Why it failed: The capacitor was the wrong frame for the actual fault. A bulged cap is a symptom of something else over-stressing the line, not the cause on its own.
02·The diagnostic shift
Bench reviewer cross-checked the dispatch tape against ambient conditions — outdoor 94 °F, indoor setpoint 68 °F — and asked the tech for two numbers before authorizing the third visit: compressor amp draw vs. nameplate FLA at steady state, and return-side delta-T at the 90-second mark.
Procedure: Amp draw came back 21% over nameplate FLA; return-side delta-T collapsed inside the first 90 seconds. That ruled the capacitor out (a cap failure under-runs amps, does not over-run them) and named refrigerant overcharge as the live suspect.
03·What it actually was
Refrigerant overcharge from a prior top-off — not a capacitor failure. Recovered to nameplate superheat and re-verified delta-T held under design load.
Visit one closed — no return dispatch.
04·Callback delta
31% → 9% on warranty VRF high-pressure visits over the 60 days after the bench review went live.
// measured over the 60 days after the diagnostic shift
From the service manager
“The board code wasn’t the failure. The board code was the symptom of a misread on the prior visit.”

— secondshift-3. The bench is the difference between a ranked guess and a verifiable verdict on a $4,000 refrigerant job. Each story in this column came out of one.
